The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek: What the critics say
Motor Trend
“The Crosstrek is a true crossover extraordinaire.” Unlike so many of the small, raised hatchbacks Americans are buying, the Outback’s little brother is “a genuine all-wheeldrive adventure vehicle with hardware to match its rugged looks.” Based as before on the five-door Impreza, the 2018 Crosstrek looks a lot like the 2017. But the platform, the power train, and the interior are all new, and despite the car’s “glaring” lack of power, it displays “a playful and sure-footed agility” whatever the terrain.

Though the Crosstrek’s new flat-four proves “much less coarse and chattery” than the engine it replaces, “brutally slow” acceleration remains a drawback. Subaru could fix the problem by offering a turbo option, but for now a driver just has to appreciate the vehicle’s sharp handling, excellent ride, and off-road features, like the 8.7 inches of ground clearance and optional hill descent control. The improved Crosstrek, all in all, is “a great option for someone looking for a small, practical car that won’t quit when the going gets (a little) rough.”

The versatile, fuel-efficient Crosstrek “can pretty much get you to any place your hobbies happen.” Besides, “the car’s so cheap to own and operate, you’ll be able to splurge on stuff like mountain bikes and BPA-free water bottles to put in it.” ■
