Charity of the week
Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in American men, affecting 1 in 6 men in their lifetime. Us Too International (ustoo.org) was created in 1990 by prostate cancer survivors and their family members to help men make informed decisions about cancer detection and treatment options and aftereffects. The organization takes a three-pronged approach to prostate cancer: advocacy, education, and support groups. It offers free online resources about managing the disease and research into the latest treatments, and hosts a toll-free help line staffed by volunteers who can provide answers from having experienced the same treatment or side effect. It also provides in-person support groups across the country, as well as in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and the Bahamas.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
