▪ At least 18 Democratic senators, governors, mayors, and former office holders are reported to be thinking of running for president in 2020. They include Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Cory Booker; Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; Rep. Adam Schiff of California; New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu; and former Vice President Joe Biden.
▪ Nearly 24 percent of the 1,881 police officers fired for misconduct since 2006 have been reinstated after labor arbitrators overruled police chief decisions. One of those 451 officers shot and killed an unarmed man, another was convicted for sexually abusing a woman in his patrol car, and a third challenged a handcuffed man to fight him for the chance to be released.

▪ The Republican Party now holds governors’ seats in 34 states, following last week’s defection of West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice from the Democratic Party. Just 15 Democrats run their state as governor. One state is led by an independent.

▪ Since the Supreme Court’s unanimous June_19 ruling throwing out a federal law prohibiting trademarks using racist and offensive words and symbols, at least nine applications for such trademarks have been filed. Seven seek to register versions of the N-word, one includes an epithet for Chinese people, and another includes a Nazi swastika.
