Pink beers: The rosé effect
Now that rosé has become almost a summer-fete requirement, “why not mix it up?” asked John Verive in the Los Angeles Times. Many craft beers “check the same boxes” as a refreshing pink wine; a few are even intended as homage.
Goses Are Red ($10/750_ml). Anaheim, Calif.’s Bruery Terreux takes a standard gose—or tart wheat ale lightly spiced with salt and coriander—then lets it sit in oak vats with wine grapes to add roundness and color. A “spritzy” effervescence “reinforces the bright, refreshing finish.”
Lindemans Oude Kriek Cuvée Réné ($12/750_ml). Fermented cherries add nice color to this “excellent” oldschool lambic from Belgium.
Hell or Highwatermelon ($10 for a six-pack). This “summertime favorite,” from San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery, combines wheat beer and real watermelon. “While it could be a little drier, it still hits many of the notes that make rosé so popular.” ■
