Show of the week

American Idol
Does 2018’s American Idol have what it takes to be the next big TV hit? For the better part of 15 years, the flashy singing competition was a ratings juggernaut that produced a string of breakthrough pop stars. But a string of copycat talent shows diluted the brand, prompting Fox to pull the plug in 2016. ABC has since swooped in, bringing back toothsome host Ryan Seacrest while banking on a burst of new energy from judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. The show’s streamlined format ends one key tradition: those funny pre-contest audition segments. Sunday, March 11, at 8 p.m., ABC
