Disney is revisiting Aladdin from a new fantastic point of view.
The first footage from the studio's live-action remake of the 1992 animated classic has just been released. The short trailer brings to life the Agrabah desert, Iago, the Cave of Wonders, and finally, Aladdin himself, played in the remake by Mena Massoud. Disney also breaks out some of the original's iconic music to get the nostalgia flowing, with an epic instrumental version of "Friend Like Me" scoring the trailer's end.
The teaser doesn't show us Will Smith as the Genie, but journalists at CinemaCon got a glimpse of him earlier this year, and CinemaBlend described him as basically just looking like Smith with a shaved head and ponytail.
Aladdin continues Disney's trend of remaking its classic films in live-action after Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete's Dragon, and Beauty and the Beast. It's directed by Guy Ritchie and hits theaters in May 2019, two months after the live-action Dumbo and two months before the live-action The Lion King. Needless to say, Disney is preparing for quite a busy year.
